I’m turning most of this post over to my cousin Karen K. Bradley (karenkbradley.ca) writing from her home in Musquodoboit Harbour, Nova Scotia.
“Yesterday a candidate for the Peoples Party—a right wing group— came by to get signatures to be on the ballot here. I signed. He is a nice guy. We talked about growing stuff, alternative medicine, and ultimately, he said, “We have to work on all this together.”
A week ago, I met with a public official who happens to be a Conservative, and during that conversation, he said, “We all need to be pulling on the same end of the rope now.”
These two politicians are right – what is truly needed now is pulling the country together and partnering with local initiatives. Every time there has been a local disaster here— a fire, hurricane, or other—we come together and become Nova Scotia Strong. (This happens everywhere, by the way).
The current economic firestorm IS a disaster and here are your choices:
- Buy a gun and hunker down and protect what you have.
- Vote for the party you think will fix it all.
- Pull the covers over your head.
- Pretend it doesn’t matter and it will all be great again.
Or you can…
Start a garden…join a group…work on local initiatives…vote for someone you want to work with, not the person you think will make it all better tomorrow.
We are in unprecedented times that require thoughtfulness and listening, and talking with, not at, each other.”
