I first visited Blue Lake, a small town in the heart of the Redwood Empire, 49 years ago.

People in Blue Lake fly their colors…

…and they are passionate.

Sometimes they can bridge their differences…

…and sometimes they just get weird.

Through it all, folks take care of each other.

It’s changed a lot over the years, from a railroad and logging town to the home of Dell’Arte International…

…which is the school I first visited in 1976, when I traveled with Make*A*Circus as their “Assistant Cook,” and where I have studied, taught, performed, directed and visited friends almost every year since. This year, I saw my friend David Ferney star in an adaptation of Moliere’s “Love is the Best Doctor”……

…and I got to co-teach a Healthcare Clowning workshop with my friends Julie Douglas and Michelle Matlock.

Blue Lake has taught me many things that I missed growing up in Berkeley, and showed me how artists can live, thrive and help energize a rural community with respect and love.
